A Brief  Introduction

Westminster Presbyterian Church was begun in 1973 by a group of believers who desired to have a congregation that emphasized the following:  the infallibility, inerrancy and authority of the Bible, the Word of God; a pulpit devoted to the preaching of the whole counsel of God with humility and authority;  a congregation devoted to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, who is Prophet, Priest and King; and a worship service focused on the worship of God and the edification of God's people.  The doctrinal constitution of Westminster Presbyterian Church is the Westminster Confession of Faith with Larger and Shorter Catechisms.

A Presbyterian and Reformed Church

The term Presbyterian refers to our form of government.  We are Presbyterian because we believe that God's word teaches us that Christ is the King and Head of His Church.  Therefore we believe that the Church is to be governed by a plurality of elders chosen and equipped by God and recognized and elected by the people.  It is the duty of the elders to rule the Church according to the truth of God's word.  Because the Lord's Church is more than an individual congregation, we as a congregation maintain close relationships with other congregations of like mind, providing a system of checks and balances.

The term "Reformed" defines our system of doctrine.  Since we believe that the Bible is the standard of all that we are to believe and do we strive to "reform" every thought and practice by evaluating all things in the light of God's word.  We stand in a long line of believers who embrace the Westminster Confession of Faith and Larger and Shorter Catechisms as the best summary of Christian doctrine.  We believe that salvation is by grace through faith alone, and that God sovereignty and graciously saves His people in such a way that destroys human pride and merit and exalts the sovereign grace of God.  We believe that those saved by the work of the Lord Jesus Christ are under obligation to obey Him, not as the ground of salvation, but as the result of salvation.

We believe that because all authority has been given to the Lord Jesus Christ, that believers have the responsibility and privilege to preach the Gospel unto the ends of the earth.  Because the Lord Jesus reigns, we believe that the Gospel will be ultimately victorious bringing about that blessed estate of the knowledge of the Lord covering the earth as the waters cover the sea.

A Family Church

Because we believe that God has ordained the family as the basic unit for the structure of every other institution, we place an emphasis on equipping individuals to function properly in the family.  It is in the family that individuals are properly equipped to serve the Lord and their fellow man.  The Church of the Lord Jesus is the collection of families as a worshiping community.  The community is composed of a collection of families fellowshipping and working together in a specific geographical location.  Each of these institutions is affected by the training given and received in families.  We, as a congregation, do not attempt to assume the responsibilities given by God to the family.  We do assume the responsibility to teach family members how to fulfill their responsibilities according to God's Word.

In practical terms this means that we do not break up the family by having activities for the various age groups in the congregation every night of the week.  In fact, we encourage most of the ministry to those outside the church to be conducted by families living out their faith in the normal context of life.

A Worshiping Church

The Bible teaches us that man was created for the glory of God.  Nowhere is that purpose to be more clearly manifested than in the worship of God.  While worship must be a daily and consistent practice of individuals and families, the Bible tells us that God is to be worshiped in public by the assembled people of God on a regular basis as well.  For this purpose the Lord set one day aside from the rest of the week that we might rest from our ordinary activities and devote ourselves to the worship of God.  Because God meets with His people in a special
way in public worship, believers are warned not to forsake the assembling together for worship which has become all too commonplace in the professing Church.

It must be remembered that worship is God centered rather than man centered.  It is only as men seek to be pleasing to God rather than being pleased that God is glorified and enjoyed.  The Westminster congregation seeks to glorify God by worshiping Him only in those ways that are prescribed by His word.  Accordingly the families of Westminster gather every Lord's Day to sing Psalms and hymns, offer prayers of praise, confession and petition, read God's word together, hear the preaching of God's word and give our tithes and offerings.  We
observe the Lord's Supper on the second Sunday of each month and administer baptism as God calls His elect people to Himself or adds children to covenant families.

A Serving Church

As the Lord Jesus did not come to be served but to be a servant, so also the people of God are called to be His servants in the world.   We serve the Lord by pursuing that practical holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).  We serve God by carrying His word to every one who will listen.  We serve God by seeking the reformation of every thought and action to the glory of God.

An Optimistic Church

Because the Lord Jesus has ascended to the right hand of God the Father where He must reign until every enemy is put under His feet, we believe that the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ will succeed in discipling the nations of the world.  We are not discouraged by the apparent decline of vital Christianity in our days, but are all the more determined to be faithful in a deceitful generation, awaiting the outpouring of God's blessing upon the preaching of and obedience to God's word.  We know that Christ has won the victory and that it must be that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

An Invitation

We invite you to worship with us on the Lord's day, or to take advantage of the Bible Studies that are offered from time to time during the week.  "O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man that takes refuge in Him."  (Psalm 34:8)
